Dynamic Data Compression with Distortion Constraints for Wireless Transmission over a Fading Channel

چکیده
We consider a wireless node that randomly receives data from different sensor units. The arriving data must be compressed, stored, and transmitted over a wireless link, where both the compression and transmission operations consume power. Specifically, the controller must choose from one of multiple compression options every timeslot. Each option requires a different amount of power and has different compression ratio properties. Further, the wireless link has potentially timevarying channels, and transmission rates depend on current channel states and transmission power allocations. We design a dynamic algorithm for joint compression and transmission, and prove that it comes arbitrarily close to minimizing average power expenditure, with an explicit tradeoff in average delay. Our approach uses stochastic network optimization together with a concept of place holder bits to provide efficient energy-delay performance. The algorithm is simple to implement and does not require knowledge of probability distributions for packet arrivals or channel states. Extensions that treat distortion constraints are also considered.

In wireless networks, we can improve system performance by exploiting cooperative communications, where neighbor nodes may interact to jointly encode, decode, or relay information. In this thesis, we show that cooperation can improve capacity, but only when the right cooperation strategy is chosen based on the network topology, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), channel state information (CSI), and p...
متن کاملA New Unequal Error Protection Technique Based on the Mutual Information of the MPEG-4 Video Frames over Wireless Networks
The performance of video transmission over wireless channels is limited by the channel noise. Thus many error resilience tools have been incorporated into the MPEG-4 video compression method. In addition to these tools, the unequal error protection (UEP) technique has been proposed to protect the different parts in an MPEG-4 video packet with different channel coding rates based on the rate...

In this paper, an important problem of efficient utilization of the available resources for video transmission over wireless channels is investigated. The popular 3-D Set Partitioning In Hierarchical Trees (3-D SPIHT) is used to produce a completely embedded video bit stream. A new channel coding technique employing low-density parity check (LDPC) codes and rate-compatible punctured convolution...
متن کاملErgodic capacity, outage capacity, and information transmission over Rayleigh fading channels
We consider the lossy transmission of source information over Rayleigh fading channels. We investigate the usefulness of various channel capacity definitions, namely ergodic capacity, where it is assumed that the channel transitions over all the fading states, and outage capacity, where the source is transmitted at a constant rate with a specified outage probability. We also study the outage ra...

SUMMARY This report documents the research work carried out for Task 3.3. on wireless transmission for control. The main objective is to study and develop physical layer communication strategies which are adapted to fit a given control application. Accordingly, most of the work deal with reliable wireless transmission strategies under strict delay constraints. Five different approaches are take...
